Currently, the Chusovoy Metallurgical Works is making arrangements for the largest-scale rehabilitation of the entire production operation since the early last century.
To coordinate the rehabilitation project, a working group has been set up including the factory's best specialists headed by A.A. Kamenskikh, a metallurgist and politician well-known in the Perm region. The group’s engineers and specialists possess all the necessary knowledge and resources for a timely and efficient implementation of the project. The leading iron and steel institutes and suppliers from Russia and Western Europe are engaged to work on the project. The main line of activity under the rehabilitation project is retrofitting the steelmaking process stage, which will result in replacing the open-hearth process with the electric-furnace steelmaking process. The new facility will include an electric arc furnace, out-of-furnace steel processing units, and a continuous-casting machine. This operation’s designed capacity totals 700 kt/a of steel.
The purpose of the CMW production rehabilitation is to achieve the following targets:
- reduce the production costs;
- substantially improve the steel quality;
- dramatically improve the ecological situation in the city, as well as enhance the rational use of the energy resources;
- raise the enterprise’s competitive capacity on the whole;
- enhance the production standards;
- resolve the social problems of the factory and the city.
The project implementation investment base has essentially been put together. Recently, UMC, the Perm regional administration, and the Western Urals Bank of Sberbank of Russia have signed a cooperation agreement related to building a new steelmaking facility at CMW. Currently, a construction project is being developed, as well a arrangements are being made for construction and erection work.
